  • The new supplementary catalogue Up2Date from the CERATIZIT cutting tool specialists, which will be published on 21 September, is all about the high-performance Dragonskin coatings.

    Those who depend on materials which are extremely resistant to aggressive environmental conditions, especially corrosion attacks, can hardly avoid austenitic stainless steels. They are very tough, which makes them a kind of fear opponent for hoggers. However, CERATIZIT is upgrading in this segment with two new cutting material grades and is sending a trio perfectly armoured by the Dragonskin coating into the field: in addition to the proven CTPM125 the more wear-resistant variant CTCM120 as well as the tougher option CTCM130 for interrupted cuts under demanding conditions complete the range – for maximum process reliability and lower scrap rates. Thanks to the Dragonskin coating, both grades are particularly powerful and process reliable.

    In cutting tests, the CVD-coated, highly wear-resistant cutting material grade CTCM120 excels in turning austenitic stainless steels such as V2A (e.g. 1.4301) and the V4A (1.4545) thanks to its high cutting speed and extended tool life. Compared to the competition, tool life can even be increased by more than 50 percent. All three grades are available as negative WSP in three chip grooves and as positive WSP in two chip grooves. “Together with the different coating techniques of the grades – PVD and CVD – we can react optimally to the pre-treatment of the material to be machined,” says Product Manager Stefan Karl.

    Layer by layer for highest performance
    Sometimes it’s the combination that does it: if one layer alone does not achieve the desired results, different layers with different properties will do the job, which together are unbeatable. This is the case with the new grade CTCM245, which was specially developed for machining high-alloy steels. A very tough substrate, an Al2O3 layer, a compound layer and a TiCN layer ensure the best performance, especially in dry machining. Thermal shocks can thus be effectively avoided. At the same time, the CTCM245 is enormously temperature resistant, allowing higher cutting speeds with reduced flank and scour wear during the machining of high-alloy steels. In application areas that require reliable processes, long tool life and high performance, the CTCM245 coated with the latest CVD technology is convincing all along the line.
