Rising material costs are inevitable. Are we considering tool weight?

Advertising

In today’s manufacturing environment, raw material prices remain unpredictable. Steel rises, carbide prices fluctuate, and logistics costs continue to shift. Yet one principle remains consistent:

Tool Cost = Material Price × Tool Weight

When a tool contains more material than necessary, increases in raw material prices naturally have a greater impact. For example: a solid carbide cutter weighs around 64 g — using 100 % raw material. A Nine9 MCC Mill insert weighs about 1 g, using less than 5 % of the material. Both perform the cutting task, but the material exposure is very different.

A different approach: Nine9 MCC Mill

The Nine9 MCC Mill is designed to optimize tool structure while maintaining strength, precision and machining stability. By reducing unnecessary material, helping reduce dependency on raw material fluctuations.

Key advantages:

  • various inserts can fit on the same holder – deburring & threading
  • 6 cutting flutes for efficient machining
  • precision geometry with Nine9’s secure clamping system
  • ideal for narrow spaces below 10 mm
  • protected by multiple international patents

Material price fluctuations may be unavoidable. But smarter tool design can help reduce their impact. Sometimes improving cost control isn’t about negotiating harder — it’s about rethinking the structure behind the tool.
